Silicosis

Silicosis is a chronic (long term) lung disease caused by inhalation of amounts of respirable crystalline silica dust (RCS), usually over many years. Most individuals do not realise they are being harmed in this way until many years later. The disease can be very debilitating and eventually fatal.

Silica is a substance found naturally in certain types of stone, rock, sand and clay and in may building products.

Cutting, grinding, breaking and other tasks with these materials creates a very fine dust that is easily inhaled deep into the lungs. Once there the dust particles are attacked by the immune system. This causes inflammation swelling and leads to areas of hardened and scarred tissue, this is called fibrosis. Lung tissue that is scarred will not function properly.

People who work in the following industries are particularly at risk;

Construction, Demolition, Manufacturing of pottery, ceramics and glass, mining and quarrying and sand blasting.

One of the control measures used is Respiratory Protective Equipment, which comes in a variety of styles , shapes and sizes. The RPE should be adequate to protect against the dust hazard and suitable for the individual.

A big part of suitability is Face Fit Testing and Training. Aspire Safety and Health offer Fit2Fit accredited respirator fit testing on site at your premises or at our location in Derbyshire just off the M1 Motorway.

We would ask that RPE wearers bring along the masks they normally wear. This is not always possible or perhaps the Fit Testing is to aid in the initial choice of RPE. So we always carry a range of Single Use FFP2 and FFP3 masks and Half Masks to ensure we find a fit for each individual on the day. This also enables us to try alternative masks when there are failures.

If needed our disposable type masks used for fit testing are charged at £3.50 each as once worn they cannot be used by another individual. If the test is passed with that mask the individual will keep it.

To help with RPE compliance and ongoing good practice we include a 30 minute tool box talk about the why and how of RPE and fit testing, this includes the basics of;

     Respiratory disease

     Moral and legal obligations of wearers

     Why Facial hair in the seal area is a big problem

     What is fit testing

     Masks and filters

     Compatible PPE
